Wolf grill will not get hot enough at 5,280 feet
Neither Wolf guide that ships with an outdoor grill mentions altitude anywhere, so there is no Denver setting to find and nothing to rejet. A grill that lights and still will not sear is short of gas, short of preheat, or losing heat off the grate faster than the burners make it. Wolf Repair Denver Pros measures the first of those: (720) 702-9054.
What you are looking at
- It lights on every burner and then sits at a temperature you would call medium, however long you leave it.
- Everything takes noticeably longer than it used to, on the same knob settings.
- The thermometer climbs while the hood is down and falls back as soon as the wind gets up.
The troubleshooting page in the Wolf guide is short here and worth reading literally. Under burners that do not heat properly it lists four things: the gas supply, a bent or kinked supply line, a preheat that has not been given its ten minutes, and spiders, insects or other obstructions in the burners. Altitude is not on that list, and neither is anything you can turn up.
What to check yourself
- Give it the full ten minutes on HI with the hood closed before you judge it. A hood lifted early undoes them.
- Follow the hose from the wall or the cylinder to the grill and look for a kink or a tight bend. Wolf lists that second, ahead of anything expensive.
- Look along the burners and into the tubes for webbing, nests and grit, and clear what a brush can reach from outside.
- Try it once on a still evening. If the same settings sear then, the variable is exposure, and a wind block is the fix Wolf names.
If you can smell gas, stop. Shut the supply off at the grill, put out any flame, open the hood, and move away before you call your gas utility or the fire department from outside. That call comes before this one, and it is not a call for an appliance shop.
What happens on the visit
- Inlet pressure read under load against Wolf's figure for your fuel, which is five inches of water column for natural gas and ten for propane.
- The whole run from the shut-off valve to the connector, because a supply that holds pressure idle can still sag with four burners alight.
- Each burner compared against its neighbours at HI and again at LO, which is how a partly blocked section gives itself away.
- Burners lifted, tubes and ports cleaned through, then each one seated again with its orifice inside the air shutter where Wolf requires it.
Follow-ups
Do I need a high-altitude conversion for a Wolf grill?
Nothing in the use and care guide or the installation guide mentions altitude, a derate or an alternative orifice for these grills, so there is no published conversion to ask for. Anyone offering to rejet an outdoor Wolf grill for Denver is working from something other than the manufacturer instructions.
How hot should it get before I call it a fault?
Judge it by what it will do rather than by a number: ten minutes on HI with the hood closed should give you a grate that sears, and a sear burner a face that has changed colour. If a full preheat still leaves you cooking on what feels like medium, book it.
Could the trouble be the gas line into the house?
It can be, and it is worth ruling in early on a patio run added years after the house was built. Wolf sets a minimum line pressure as well as a supply pressure, and a long or undersized run can satisfy one and miss the other. Wolf Repair Denver Pros reads both on (720) 702-9054.
